For each of us, there are times when we feel we don’t understand the game. We feel discouraged, anxious, hopeless, and we feel we are in the middle of a game we do not understand.
We find ourselves facing a confrontation or challenge and while our gut is telling us, “Retreat!, Retreat!”, we know that is not the woman we want to be.
We are angry, frustrated, confused and uncertain about how and when to assert ourselves and when to defer. Saying the wrong thing or saying the right thing with too much or the wrong emotion can set us back in the opinions of those important to our careers.
We may feel a courageous impulse – “here is my chance to redefine myself in the eyes of others so that they see me as I see myself – smart, strong, authentic”, but the moment of courage deflates when faced with my fear of failure, my fear of potential public humiliation and I pull back and defer and quietly slip to the side.
We feel discouraged, defeated, and regret for not having the courage to speak.
Each of us comes to our careers with our own narrative – it is the lens through which we see ourselves, our peers, our bosses and our professional world. We learn our narrative from our parents, our families, and our communities and from our early experiences with success and failure.

We can change our narrative – the stories we tell ourselves in those moments of opportunity. We can create a new narrative – one that allows us to fully, thoughtfully, and authentically participate in the personal and professional life we seek.
